The high honor to open the Victory Parade was granted to the guards of honor of the Smolensk garrison, who brought the Victory Banner, the Russian Federation State flag, and the flag of the Russian Armed Forces into the central square.
The Deputy Chief of the Military Academy of Air Defence of the Russian Armed Forces named after the Marshal of the Soviet Union A.M. Vasilevsky, a holder of the Order of "Military Merit" and the medal of “Merit for the Homeland" Colonel Boris Novikov commanded the parade.
The chief of the Smolensk territorial garrison, Head of the Military Academy, a holder of the Order of "Military Merit", Honored Military Specialist of the Russian Federation Major-General Gleb Eremin received the parade.
Over a thousand people, including the students of the Cadet Corps named after Field Marshal Kutuzov, who are just beginning to master the military science, and, of course, the veterans as in the old days marching in front of the spectators, participated in the parade.
In a single column there were former soldiers who liberated the Smolensk region and fought for Stalingrad, snipers and partisans, medical service officers, workers of the rear. All of them – the Heroes who gained the Victory in the Great Patriotic War - warmly welcomed their countrymen.
For those World War II veterans who could not join their comrades the organizers of the parade prepared special spectator seats from which they could see everything what was happening.
