Congratulations for the social workers of the Smolensk region on their professional holiday

The “Gubernskiy” cultural and recreational center hosted a ceremony dedicated to the Day of Social Worker. The Governor Alexey Ostrovskiy congratulated people working in this sphere on their professional holiday.

Social Worker's Day in modern Russia was formally established in 2000. On this day, June 8, 1701 in the Russian Empire, Peter I issued a decree "On the establishment of the rooms for the poor, the sick and the elderly in the premises of the Holy Patriarchate", according to which "for ten patients in the poorhouse there had to be one healthy, who would look after and help those patients". These places were opened at churches and had state support, to assist the elderly and sick there doctors were hired. A profession of a social worker appeared in Russia only in the 90s of the last century.

Every day in the Smolensk region more than eight thousand professionals of this sphere come to the aid of veterans, the disabled, large families and everybody who found themselves in a difficult life situation. This work is of particular importance for the region.

Alexey Ostrovskiy presented the best employees with the Diplomas of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation and the Regional Administration, and Letters of Appreciation from the Governor.
