The rally dedicated to the Airborne Forces Day

The Deputy Governor Olga Okuneva took part in the rally devoted to the 86th anniversary of formation of the Airborne Forces, which took place in the soldiers-internationalists memorial park.

The Airborne Forces have always been considered the elite of the Russian Army. The marines carry out the most complex and responsible tasks requiring special heroism and self-sacrifice.

Olga Okuneva read out a congratulatory address by the Governor Alexey Ostrovskiy: "Airborne Forces are the pride of the Army! The marines are always there wherever it is most dangerous, where there is a need for excellent military training and excellent physical form, self-sacrifice and courage".

For Smolensk region the Airborne Forces Day is of special significance. In fact, it is our region where the Vyazma airborne operation - the largest one in the Great Patriotic War – took place. In almost six months the marines covered about 600 kilometers in the rear of the German fascist troops, killed nearly 15 thousand soldiers and officers. Also, in the post-war years the "winged infantry" has always been the center of attention, at the forefront, with their admirable combat skills, courage and determination.

Today, on the territory of Smolensk region there are about 10 thousand marines and Airborne Forces veterans. All of them selflessly and honestly served and are still serving the Homeland, proving that the motto: "No one except us" is not just a phrase.
