Governor Sergey Antufiev paid a visit to the presentation of the new digital equipment at the TV studio of the National Broadcasting Company ‘Smolensk’. The modern technical equipment allows putting material on the air quickly, and that is the first step to digital broadcasting in our region.

According to the head of the National Broadcasting Company ‘Smolensk’ Natalia Yurchenko, despite the fact that the equipment had been installed within the federal address investment program of digital television, it was financed by the main office – the All-Russian National Broadcasting Company. ‘As we are a frontier region in particular, a priority one for digital broadcasting’, explained Natalia Yurchenko.

Today, the film units have state-of-the-art technologies at their disposal: six cameras with microphones and tripods ideal for digital broadcasting. The work will be based on a completely different principle – there will be no cassettes, all the information will be recorded on a memory card and sent immediately to the cutter. The broadcasting company also got five computers with the operational system Mackintosh.

‘The fact that today we see new modern television in our region arouses the feeling of contentment with the work done together’, marked the Governor examining the new complex of digital equipment. ‘I am greatly pleased to hear that television programmes will be broadcast over the whole territory of the region. We will be able to see good programmes of high quality in each area, and all the townsmen and villagers will be well informed of the latest news. The new equipment gives everybody an opportunity to feel like a man keeping up to date, a man of the XXI century. The new equipment inspires, and I think all the leaders will find it more pleasant to be on the air’.

The digitalization in the Smolensk region will be completed in the years 2012-2013. That will increase the efficiency of telecasting, and citizens of most remote areas will be able to see a great number of television and radio channels of high quality.

New television transmitters of digital broadcasting will be installed in 28 settlements of the Smolensk region. They will broadcast nine television and radio programmes during the first year of their work, and the number of channels will rise to 24 at the end of 2014.

The change-over to the new type of signal transmission depends a lot on the preparedness of viewers for taking the signal of the new format. Viewers having old television sets will be able to buy digital set-top boxes.
