In the Hero-city Smolensk at the Fire of Eternal Glory there was a rally dedicated to the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Smolensk region from the Nazi invaders. The Governor Alexey Ostrovskiy took part in it.

In the Heroes Memorial Park there were front-line veterans, home front workers, management of the region and the city, representatives of state authorities and public organizations, Smolensk garrison soldiers, university and school students. They all paid tribute to the heroism of the Homeland defenders and those who liberated the Smolensk land from the Nazi invaders in particular.

In his greeting speech, Alexey Ostrovskiy said: "The memory of the Victory is a genetic code for all the Russians, for everybody who live with the pain and the memory in the heart of their loved ones whom we owe our lives.

This year we are celebrating another very significant event - the 75th anniversary of the battle of Smolensk, when, thanks to the courage and heroism of the people defending Smolensk, for some time the Nazis plans were thwarted and their blitzkrieg attempt, intentions to take Moscow as soon as possible, failed".

The Metropolitan of Smolensk and Roslavl Isidor also congratulated the participants on the anniversary of the liberation of Smolensk region. Addressing the veterans, he said that only the memory of the past of the people, the love for the country can help to develop patriotism and a solid inner core in the current and future generations.
