The participants of the Olympic Games were celebrated in Smolensk

The Governor Alexey Ostrovskiy attended the ceremony of honoring the athletes who participated in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The ceremony was held in the Smolensk State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism(SGAFKST), in which the athletes are studying.

The ceremony was held for the members of the Russian Olympic team - two-times 2016 Olympic champion fencer Yana Egoryan, silver medalists of the Olympics gymnasts Daria Spiridonova and Nikita Nagorny, Ivan Stretovych, Seda Tutkhalyan, as well as the participants of the Games gymnasts Evgenia Shelgunova and Vladislav Polyashov. More than three hundred SGAFKST students came to celebrate the participants of the Olympics.

It is noteworthy that among the 14 universities of physical culture the Smolensk Sports Academy has set a record for the number of students who stepped up to the Olympic podium in Rio de Janeiro. The students and graduates of SGAFKST won 9 medals, 3 of which are of the greatest value.

The Governor, on behalf of all of the Smolensk residents, thanked the athletes for the high achievements and wished them further sport victories. Then Alexey Ostrovskiy awarded the Rector of the Smolensk State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism Georgiy Gretz with a Cup and a diploma from the Sports Ministry of Russia for the outstanding achievements of the SGAFKST students at the Winter Universiade in 2016.
