Monument to Peter the Great was unveiled in Gagarin

In Gagarin, on the Day of Russia has taken place the solemn ceremony of unveiling of monument to Peter the Great, founder of this city. Olga Vasilyeva – vice Governor, deputies of regional Duma, delegations from municipal districts of Smolensk region, numerous guests from Moscow and the Republic of Belarus have participated in this ceremony.   

Up to 1968 had Gagarin city the name Gzhatsk and celebrates its birthday traditionally on the Day of Russia. With its foundation Gagarin is obligated to the birth of capital of the North. In his search of more convenient ways of goods traffic took Peter the Great his notice on river Gzhat'. Later gave this river the name to Gzhatsk. The first bread caravan arrived in Ladoga Canal in 1718. And one year later Peter the Great issued an ordinance about opening of landing stage in Gzhatsk.

Monument to founder of the city is placed at the intersection of embankment Leningradskaya and Lenin Street. Aleksandra Rusetskaya – member of commonwealth of artists of Russia is the creator of monument. According local authorities opinion unveiling of monument will promote increase of touristic attractiveness of Gagarin city and form new traditions.
