To mark the 200th anniversary of the Patriotic war
In Smolensk district’s Ilovka village events to commemoratethe 200th anniversary of the Patriotic war were held on June 24. That place was chosen for a reason; it was here that the Olenin brothers – both of them battelfield generals and war heroes of 1812 – were buried in their estate.
Evgeniy Ivanovich Olenin commanded a guerilla regiment and fought in the Borodino battle; also, in 1813 he fought off two pieces of enemy’s ordnance near a borough of Lutzen during the foreign campaign. In 2011, Evgeniy Ivanovich’s bust sculpture was installed in the Heros’ Memorial park in Smolensk. His brother Vladimir Uvanovich Olenin was an honored general and a war-fighter as well.
A speech was given by Deputy Head of Smolensk district administration office Oleg Lonschakov and hieromonk Rafail who performed a memorial service for the diceased. The ceremony was concluded by laying flowers to Olenins’ graves.
