Complex «Gnezdovo barrows» can be included in World Heritage List of UNESCO

The first in Russia International scientific conference devoted to problems of archaeology, preservation of historical-cultural heritage and tourism development started its work on the 21-th of August in Smolensk.

In our city gathered more than 40 foreign participants from 20 countries and more than 80 Russian scientists among them representatives of Moscow State University, Institute of Geography of Russian Academy of Sciences, State Historical Museum. Nickolai Kuznetsov, Vice-governor welcomed guests and participants of conference «Geomorphological processes and geoarchaeology» during the solemn ceremony of opening in Smolensk University for Humanities.

«Such conferences take regularly place in different countries of the World and at the first time such an important international event was organized in Russia. We are very thankful to organizers that our city was chosen as venue of conference. The choice of Smolensk is connected with existence of unique    archaeological complexes «Gnezdovo barrows» and «Serteysk complex of pile settling». Participants of conference get an opportunity become familiar with rich historical and cultural heritage of our region on the threshold of celebration of the 1150-th anniversary of Smolensk foundation», – noted Deputy of Governor.

He also voiced the hope that all importance of conference and personal authority of participants allow to recommend Gnezdovo and Serteysk archaeological complexes for including in World Heritage List of UNESCO it will undoubtedly promote a forming of positive image of Smolensk region  on world touristic market.
