Smolensk region was memorialized French pilot

In Krasny district was unveiled stelein honor of Leo Barbier, pilot Squadron "Normandie", who was killed in 1943 in a battle near by the village Ivanovka.  Second Lieutenant Barbier was shot down and killed on the 15-th of October 1943.

Smolensk searchers solemnly handed design elements of found Yak to Relatives of the pilot who came from France. In addition took place a meeting with local residents, the direct witnesses of those tragic events.

The right of the grand opening of the stele provided the Deputy of Governor Nikolai Kuznetsov, president of the Association of Veterans regiment "Normandy-Niemen".

The event ended a colorful performance of the pilot-athlete from Krasny district that performed the most complicated stage stunts in the air and wrote the name "Leo" in memory of the died French pilot. 

Monument unveiled in Krasny district was one of the many events taking place in Russia and France this year, and the 70-th anniversary of the regiment "Normandy-Neman".
