The delegation of the Moscow State University honored the memory of undergraduate and postgraduate students and university staff who were members of the people’s volunteer corps and were killed on the Yelnya land

Governor Alexey Ostrovskiy, together with the Rector of the Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichiy, students and lecturers of the University, local people, veterans and school students took part in a meeting and laid flowers to the "Cannon" monument to the soldiers of the people’s volunteer corps of the 975th Artillery Regiment, 8th Krasnopresnenskaya Infantry Division, in which under and postgraduate students and staff of MSU fought bravely.

Each year the delegation of the Moscow State University comes to the Yelninskiy district to visit the monument to the under and post graduate students and staff of MSU, who died in October 1941.

In autumn 1941 there were fierce battles near Yelnya. The 9th Kirov and the 8th Krasnopresnenskaya Divisions of people’s volunteer corps of Moscow were fighting in them. 1,065 under and postgraduate students of the Moscow State University were members of the latter. In the area the monuments to these military units, as well as a separate monument to the soldiers of the 975 Artillery Regiment, 8th Division were set up. It was built by the volunteer construction unit of the Moscow University in 1979. The initiator of its construction was Academician Gorimir Cherny, who in the 70s suggested commemorating the feat of the under and post graduate students of the Moscow State University.
