Smolensk Medals at the World Summer Universiade in Kazan

From 6 to 17 of July XXVII World Summer Universiade is being held in Kazan. Over 12,000 people, including 9,033 athletes from 162 countries, are taking part in the Games.

14 athletes - students Smolensk State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism represent the Smolensk region at the competitions. Our young athletes have won two gold and one bronze medals in the rowing and fencing events, as well as a silver medal in the triple jump.

The first medal was won by the Smolensk students on July, 7. Kamil Ibragimov won a gold medal in saber fencing, and the women's duo of Anna Yazykova and Natalia Varfolomeyeva won a bronze medal in rowing at the Universiade.

Besides Anna Yazykova two more student of the Smolensk Sport Academy showed outstanding results. Lev Gritsenko and Victor Misyutkin won gold in the eights on July, 8.

On July, 9 Alexey Fedorov from Smolensk, who was leading after the qualifying round, but in the end lost to an athlete from Ukraine, won a silver medal in the triple jump.

Today, Smolensk fencer Kamil Ibragimov has won another gold medal for the Russian national team in the final saber team competition with the Italian team.

Later on, the Smolensk students are going to take part in the team fencing and shooting competitions. Sergei Cherviakovsky is expected to win in shooting. He already won a silver medal at the previous Universiade in China.

Now the Russian student team is definitely a leader in the team medal tally.
