The City Culture Hall hosted a meeting dedicated to the International Day of Senior Citizens. This celebration is a token of great respect and attention to people of older generation for their great contribution to the Fatherland’s prosperity.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Nikolai Kuznetsov, Head of the Social Development Department of Smolensk region Yulia Novikova and other guests who warmly greeted the participants of the celebration.

"By your work you have created the foundations to determine for many years the material and spiritual content in our society and state, - said the Vice-Governor. - On behalf of Governor of Smolensk region Alexey Vladimirovich Ostrovskiy, of the Administration of the region I would like to congratulate everybody present, and all those who could not be here today because of their state of health. I would like to wish optimism that has always accompanied you, was the main content of your life, your long-term work. There are still questions to be addressed by the federal, regional and municipal authorities regarding the citizens of our state, who have created the basis of its power. But a lot in our lives depends on the activity of the citizens themselves. On how critical they are to the government, to its establishment and effectiveness. Let me wish each of you to continue an active life, and have an active life position, which we appreciate so much. I wish you health, vigor, relentless pursuit of justice. We really need it."

All the speakers were unanimous in their opinion that the Day of the Senior citizens should be given a different name - the Day of Wisdom. The older generation has carried hope for the best through the difficulties of life, which is something that their children and grandchildren are lacking today. The older generation has a great collection of great deeds – the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, selfless work for the future of their children and grandchildren. This year we are celebrating the special for all of us date - the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Smolensk from the German fascist invaders.

The younger generation of Smolensk people is grateful to senior citizens for going through all the difficulties for the sake of the future generations. These difficulties include childhood during World War II, the necessity to rebuild the ruined cities and villages, to grow crops and bring up children. All this was done through tremendous work and strain. The older generation helps us to live and enjoy life even in the most difficult time, teaches us patience and determination.

The concert of talented creative teams and Smolensk artists made aged, but young inside their heart Smolensk people smile and evoked pleasant memories.
