As part of the agreement between the Administration of Smolensk region and the Fresenius Medical Care Deutschland GmbH on cooperation in treating patients with renal insufficiency CEO of Fresenius Medical Care in Russia Alexey Myagkov and Business Development Director Igor Kulikov visited Smolensk.

This is a joint project to build in Smolensk a high-tech dialysis center, as well as to organize dialysis units on the basis of the healthcare institutions of Smolensk region.

During the meeting the head of the Healthcare Department of Smolensk region Vladimir Stepchenkov and the representatives of the investing company discussed a number of organizational issues related to the future construction of a modern medical facility.

After the meeting, Vladimir Stepchenkov, Alexey Myagkov and Igor Kulikov inspected the construction site, which is located next to the buildings of the regional hospital and the regional hospital for war veterans facing Marshal Konev drive.

As the representatives of the Fresenius Company explained in the interview with the journalists, a two-storey dialysis center with an area of over 2,000 square meters is to be built in Smolensk in compliance with the most advanced European technologies. It is planned to equip it with 38 "artificial kidney" devices of the last generation, which will allow to treat 230 patients by hemodialysis. Hemodialysis is the most widely-used method of kidney function compensation. It accounts for over 70% of the overall renal compensation therapy in Russia. The hemodialysis procedure is performed in an outpatient unit using the "artificial kidney" device and requires special conditions.

It is planned that in the summer of 2014 the dialysis center in Smolensk will receive its first patients. The clinic equipped by the German company Fresenius Medical Care will provided regular outpatient care to the patients with chronic renal failure. There also will be all the necessary facilities for treating the patients by peritoneal dialysis (another method of renal compensation therapy). This will largely meet the needs of the region in the future. In addition, as a result of the opening of the dialysis center there should appear about 60 new jobs: jobs of highly skilled doctors-nephrologists, dialysis nurses and attendants. Additional tax revenue to the regional budget should also be taken into account.

The network of Fresenius Medical Care dialysis centers is constantly expanding, and new clinics can ensure that patients with kidney diseases will get affordable and timely medical assistance of the best European standards. There are already 30 of such dialysis centers operating in 15 regions of the Russian Federation.

Thus, the construction of a dialysis center in the regional center is an example of the harmonious interaction of Smolensk regional Administration and business community in the form of public-private partnership.
