May Day demonstrations brought together thousands of Smolensk residents

In Smolensk region on Spring and Labor Day there were May Day processions, in which civil servants, representatives of the trade unions, political parties, companies and organizations of Smolensk, veterans and students took part.

In Smolensk the ranks of demonstrators marched onto the city's main square. The representatives of the political parties were carrying flags and flowers, the trade union activists came to the May Day demonstrations with slogans calling for decent work.

Flowers and colored balloons created a festive atmosphere the traditional for Spring and Labor Day and an overall feeling of unity and solidarity.

In Smolensk region on Spring and Labor Day there were May Day processions, in which civil servants, representatives of the trade unions, political parties, companies and organizations of Smolensk, veterans and students took part.

On behalf of Governor Alexey Ostrovskiy, Vice-Governor - Head of the Administrative Office of Smolensk region Administration Lev Platonov greeted the Smolensk residents. "May Day takes a special place in the calendar of the public holidays in Russia. Changing along with the times, this day has not lost its meaning and significance as a holiday of unity and solidarity of all the creative forces of the country, as a holiday symbolizing our common aspiration for peace, welfare and happiness, as well as prosperity of our Homeland. Whatever meaning was attributed to May Day in different periods of history, it has always been and will remain a bright and joyful spring holiday – a holiday of renewal, revival of hopes for a better life, good coming changes”, - said Lev Platonov in his welcoming speech.

Greeting the Smolensk residents, Deputy Governor said that at present the positive changes can be seen in many sectors of the economy and social sphere of Smolensk region. However, further improvement of the welfare of the Smolensk people still remains the main task for the authorities at all levels, trade unions, management of companies and organizations. Improving life quality is a priority in the work of Governor Alexey Ostrovskiy and the Regional Administration under his leadership.

Also, on May Day traditionally the best local trade union organizations and companies of the region were announced and the words of thanks were said to the best workers for their efficient work, skills and professionalism.
